November 17th 1972.
First in concert performance of Drive In Saturday.
"Not the greatest of sound but folklore has it this is actually the first time Bowie ever performed Drive In Saturday.
Some say it was performed earlier in the tour but as it states on the Aladdin Sane vinyl (and Bowie also recounts at the Cleveland show a week later) that it was written between Seattle & Phoenix (and not Chicago & Florida like Bowie comments on this live audio) I'd put money on this being the first as there was only four shows once Bowie left Phoenix before this gig, three of which were cancelled which entailed a ten day lay off in Arizona ...
16.11.72. Chicago (cancelled) - USA
20.11.72. Los Angeles, Santa Monica Civic Auditorium - USA
21.11.72. Los Angeles, Santa Monica Civic Auditorium - USA
27.11.72. San Francisco, Winterland Auditorium - USA
28.11.72. San Francisco, Winterland Auditorium - USA
04.11.72. Phoenix, Celebrity Theater - USA
11.11.72. Dallas, Majestic Theatre (cancelled) - USA
12.11.72. Houston, The Music Hall (cancelled) - USA
13.11.72. Oklahoma City (cancelled) - USA
14.11.72. New Orleans, Lagola University - USA
17.11.72. Fort Lauderdale, Pirate's Cove Amusement Park - USA
It's on Fiveyears.com that someone "not familiar with any of the songs" and a very good chance of being stoned has 20+ old year recollections of this being played on 04.11.72. at Phoenix, Celebrity Theater the eve that Bowie arrived in Phoenix to a tiny crowd of 200 which I think dubious and probably an urban myth created during the advent of the internet (or is it possible the bootleggers whom are known for mistakes have incorrectly stated the recording source as from Pirates World when it could be from Celebrity Theater? It's all speculation and 'cut and paste' in these internet days )
So unless Bowie did perform this at either the Phoenix or New Orleans gigs I'll still go with this being the first performance until I actually hear a recording of an earlier performance if it exists or credible evidence from a credible source."
