I don't profess to be knowledgeable and I always stand to be corrected as most days I don’t know what day of the week it is but noticed yesterday (31st May) that Davidbowie.com posted in celebration of the 39th anniversary of the release of the Diamond Dogs album (31st May 1974) which was subsequently reposted everywhere from fan sites to ‘Twitter’.
And I stand to be corrected again but I’m sure that even although Diamond Dogs went to No 1 in the UK (25 in the US)it was actually a slow seller and it was only in July that it was eventually given a RIAA gold presentation award for the sale of 500,000 copies. A quick check on the net has the following sites 5Years.com/Wikipedia/Bassman/Teenage Wildlife and others stating the release date as 24th April 1974 whilst some others Idbd & others list the release date as March (though for some reason they don’t give a “day” date)
Got to thinking maybe I was wrong as I haven’t seen any sites or forums query Davidbowie.com’s post so for those folx who have knowledge of these kinda things (or have books near to hand as I ain’t going up my attic) what is the correct release date for Diamond Dogs?
24.04.74 or 31.05.74?

PS Just noticed in Davidbowie.com’s own bio page they list Diamond Dogs as being released in April 1973 so I’m guessing that I am in fact correct and they’re just being “Bewitched,Bothered And Bewildered”?

Had a prowl about on the internet and located some random books that were the nearest to hand and it all gets a bit confusing as the release date is given as March,April,May and June depending on which site/book you read.
Anyways see the pix below and make up your own mind.
My monies are on 01.06.74 but like said I could be wrong.

You’d think that in this digital age with that thing called the digital super highway otherwise known as the internet with the vast amount of information flowing backwards and forwards it’d be simple to just find the release date for an album but the more I look the more different answers I get.

Another little fact that kinda throws me...
The 24th April 1974 was a Wednesday.
The 24th May 1974 was a Friday.
The 31st May 1974 was a Friday.
The 1st June was a Saturday.
Weren't "Release Days" in the UK a Monday?
(Maybe the albums were shipped on a Friday? No?)
Guess the only way I'll be 100% certain is If I go up the Freecloud attic and route through all my NME's,Sounds' & Record Mirrors' to see physical copies of the album charts for April to June 1974.

Hi Jack, according to this site it was released on 24-4-1974, at least in The Netherlands. But this may just be copied from an erroneous source. www.dutchcharts.nl/showitem.asp?interpret=David+Bowie&titel=Diamond+Dogs&cat=aLP RCA NL 83 889 24/04/1974 LP RCA / Victor APL1-0576 [uk] 1974 However, chart entry in Norway (the only country mentioned on this site) is in week 24, which starts on Monday June 10. Thanx for taking the time to post that.
(The little UK official charts archive that you posted was the one that I posted, except I posted the albums charts)
I will concur 90% that I think that Diamond Dogs was officially released on 01.06.74.as after all my trawling the internet sites I've become sceptical of the information they provide which like you say is a bit "erroneous" as they just copy and post without proof.
The same also goes with the Bowie books.
I'll wait until I or someone can post a physical copy of the chart run down from a music magazine for the weeks in question.
