Courtesey of Bowienet.com We are very excited to be able to exclusively announce that EMI will be releasing a very limited edition picture disc of Starman/Starman (TOTP Mix) in celebration of international Record Store Day (RSD) on April 21st, 2012.
David Bowie ‘Starman’ 7” Picture Disc Exclusive for Record Store Day 2012
Local cat no: DBSTAR 40 / ICPN: 50999-559791-7-7
A side: David Bowie - Starman (original single version) (stereo)
B side: David Bowie - Starman (audio from legendary ‘Top Of The Pops’ TV performance) (3.35) (mono)
These discs are pressed to pre-ordered quantities, so if you don't register your interest in advance with a participating store, you're likely to miss out.Find it sad when this is considered as 'exciting news' in these days of a desert of Bowie product.
In "the old days" when Bowie was active and releasing product this would've been considered a little cherry on the cake, but these days we now get the cherry without the cake.

Try clicking on this link to find some shops near you selling the disc.
www.recordstoreday.com/Venues
Don't worry that it asks for zip codes and states as like all things in the cyberworld, America is set up as though it's the world, when it's not.
Just type in your city and some stores will come up.
If you can think of any 'small independant record stores' in your city, then it's a fair bet they'll sell it. (And probably London has more than most?)
With typing in 'London' I found these stores... maybe some are 'London U.S.A.' but you'll know which is which, and If you're not from that city then it works for any other one that you type in.

No probs I.
For everyone else...
I can't believe how haphazzard this all sounds for a company like E.M.I.when this release is all shrouded in vagueness, limited to a small amount of stores were fans don't actually know where they are,the stores don't know how many copies that they are actually receiving and we have the myth of ordering copies and how many when it seems to be at the discretion of the shop owners how they sell their copies when they finally know how many copies that they're receiving.
Sounds like heaven for the " scamming eBay seller scum" in my view.
And will expect 'Ultra Rare' copies to appear on eBay within an hour of the record stores opening.
Needless to say I contacted another I.R.S.D. today so know I'll get my copies.
And you won't see them on eBay !
Jack"Imagined" images of how the picture disc may look via Bowienet.com and their admin's imagination after too many 'Sweetheart Stouts'.

I see that folx are posting elsewhere on the net that Amazon.com are selling this release. Now is it moi being dense or are some folx not following the ball? But as always I stand to be corrected.
Amazon.com selling this is the polar opposite of EMI's press release and RSD's company policy as below.
EMI- We are very excited to be able to exclusively announce that EMI will be releasing a very limited edition picture disc of Starman/Starman (TOTP Mix) in celebration of international Record Store Day (RSD) on April 21st, 2012.
David Bowie ‘Starman’ 7” Picture Disc Exclusive for Record Store Day 2012 Local cat no: DBSTAR 40 / ICPN: 50999-559791-7-7
RSD- A Record Store Day participating store is defined as a retailer whose main primary business focuses on a physical store location, whose product line consists of at least 50% music retail, whose company is not publicly traded and whose ownership is at least 70% located in the state of operation. (In other words, we’re dealing with real, live, physical, indie record stores—not online retailers or corporate behemoths).
Also if this were true(which I doubt unless it's a different standard black vinyl copy release)why have Amazon listed a different release date/label and catalogue number ? (or is ASIN an 'Amazon special item number for Amazon as I don't shop there?)
Amazon.com UK- Vinyl (17 April 2012) Number of Discs: 1 Format: Maxi Label: Emm/Virgin ASIN: B0079J28X2
The vagueness surrounding this release is mystifying.
But at least in amongst all this vagueness I know it costs £10 from my local RSD store.
Oh! And April 21st is Iggy Pop's birthday.

My Record Store Day 2012 story.
So I get to Red Eye about 8:40 and there's already a queue of about 20 people. The guy in front of me is carrying a Utopia (heavy metal shop) bag and says that they opened about 8:30 (they're just down the road). I decide to wait at Red Eye.
So the door opens and I get through the door, but have to wait on the middle of the stairs and the queue doesn't move. After about 5 or 10 minutes someone from the front of the queue eventually comes out and starts up the stairs and I notice that it's my mate Greg Eagle (Mr Sputnik).
I poke him in the chest as he's passing and say "I hope you haven't taken my single!" He goes into his bag and reveals that he has got a Starman. He also says that there was only 2 and that they've all gone.
"Bugger this" I say, "I'm off to Utopia." Greg joins me. He tells me that he's been outside Red Eye since 6am (in the dark and mist). Last year he got there at that time and was first in the queue. This year he was third.
When we get to Utopia Greg freaks because it's open. Last year it didn't open until 10. We get in and I get my Starman. Phew. Greg gets a spare and there's none left. Oh well, not my problem. Over the moon 'arry!

Glad you managed to get your mitts on a copy S and hope everyone else managed to secure a copy.
Of course I managed to get my copies but was still miffed at all those bloody eBay sellers. Seen all the American/Canadian sellers putting copies on eBay but while I was still standing in the queue waiting for the shop to open all these copies started appearing on eBay from English sellers. Even folx standing around me who were obviously not Bowie fans were all talking about buying copies to sell on. I felt like giving them a slap but I'd have probably lost my place in the queue.
Definately a shambolic way of releasing a Bowie record, and I'm sure EMI et all could've blocked all those sales on eBay If they could've been bothered.
Oh Well!

Seen all the American/Canadian sellers putting copies on eBay but while I was still standing in the queue waiting for the shop to open all these copies started appearing on eBay from English sellers. Yes, Greg was complaining that the Feist/Mastodon record was for sale on eBay on the Friday. The handful of copies of the Bowie single that were available in Sydney, Australia's largest city, reflects what a backwater this country is regarded as by the record companies. Despite the fact that two of Bowie's best selling singles, Let's Dance and Chaina Girl were recorded and videoed in and around Sydney, we get treated like shit. When Bowie did the live cinema broadcast/Q&A for Reality (I bought the first tickets for Sydney) they had to expand it from one theatre to three to accommodate all the people who wanted to pay to see it. Yet we only get a handful of RSD singles. I was lucky to get a copy at all. Many real fans probably missed out altogether while these eBay profiteers made money. B*stards.

Stood outside our local record shop, in the cold and rain, for six hours and didn't manage to get a copy! Have since bought one on ebay for £38.99 as I obviously need to have one to file away in the collection.
Was very happy to see yesterday that RSD will be banning certain shops from participating from next year onwards - for both selling discs on ebay and also for saving copies of records for certain people and not following the rules correctly by selling them on a first come first served basis. It was reported by a number of customers at Tower Records in London that staff were openly checking ebay on the net to see how some of their discs were doing - including all six copies of the Starman single that they had in!
